What is jewish gematria

jewish gematria is an ancient system used to assign numerical values to Hebrew words in order to interpret the deeper hidden meanings of the Bible. In Jewish Gematria, each Hebrew letter corresponds to a specific numerical value, or gematria, which when added together gives a total numerical sum for a word or phrase. This highly systemized method of interpretation was used by ancient rabbinical scholars to uncover hidden messages and meanings within the Hebrew language.

The most common form known as Mispar Gadol, The Great Number was developed during biblical times by an unknown scholar who sought out deeper meaning in the old testament texts. The Mishnah, a codified duplication of oral law and Hebrew scripture commonly used by Jewish scholars includes some basic commentaries on various Gematriot-based interpretations as well.

The principle behind this system is that once you have determined the numeric value or gematria of each word you are looking at, then you can look for connections between separate words with similar values. This helps build up a web of understanding where one context can lend more insight into another. Through Gematria analysis one can begin to make connections between completely different ideas within scripture and other texts.
